New Studio Album

Out Of My Head the 10th studio album from Delaney Davidson is currently in production. Having written extensively over lockdown times in Aotearoa, Delaney worked at Sublime Studios in the Waitaki Valley, Te Ra Studios in Diamond Harbour, Lyttleton and Masseys Ahumairangi Studio in Wellington:

These songs felt like they fit together. Mostly solo with some co writes too. I had a real odd bunch of collaborators, things written with Hayley Westenra, a song with Sam Scott, one with Marlon and a song with Miranda Eastern.

Bringing Merk into the co production role brought a flavour that felt like it fitted with my darker sentimental style. His musicality and focus really extended the songs into some beautiful territory. He also made me slow down a lot which was counter intuitive but also a really nice way to work

As the first album to be recorded in Te Ra studios there was a lot of discussion around set ups and also around musical approaches and choices. We used Eno and Schmidts Oblique Strategy cards. We had Marlon there for some days as vocal coach. He sang on a song and I also asked Reb Fountain to come sing with me.

I think the songs really benefitted from the slow discussion and commitee style way of working. It was all so local, I could wander down the hill get the boat over the water and walk up the hill to the studio, then walk down the hill, get the boat back and walk up the hill home.
